In this article, we would like to show you how to use BETWEEN clause in PostgreSQL.

Quick solution:

SELECT * FROM "table_name" WHERE "column_name" BETWEEN value_1 AND value_2;

Practical example

To show how BETWEEN clause works, we will use the following table:

PostgreSQL - example data used with BETWEEN clause
PostgreSQL - example data used with BETWEEN clause

Note:

At the end of this article you can find database preparation SQL queries.

Example

In this example, we will display users with id column values between 2 and 4.

Query:

SELECT * FROM "users" WHERE "id" BETWEEN 2 AND 4;

Result:

Result - HeidiSQL

Note:

BETWEEN clause is used very often for dates.

Database preparation

create_tables.sql file:

CREATE TABLE "users" (
	"id" SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
	"name" VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,
	"role" VARCHAR(15) NOT NULL
);

insert_data.sql file:

INSERT INTO "users"
	("name", "role")
VALUES
	('John', 'admin'),
	('Chris', 'moderator'),
	('Kate', 'user'),
	('Denis', 'moderator');
